Diabetes - It's a term we hear all the time, but do you really know what it is? Diabetes is regulated by the insulin in the body. Insulin is a hormone created by the pancreas that allows sugar (glucose) produced by the carbohydrates we eat to "unlock" the cells, allowing the body to use for energy or store for a later time. If our bodies aren't making enough or not reacting correctly to the insulin, then sugar (glucose) builds up in the bloodstream.
Too Much Blood Sugar Leads to Health Issues:
Amputations of toes, feet, and legs
Erectile dysfunction in men
Decreased sexual desire for men and women.
Type 1 Diabetes
Generally diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults, but can be diagnosed at any age.
The pancreas doesn't make insulin, or makes very little of it.
Currently, there is no way to prevent Type 1 Diabetes, but it can be controlled by eating healthy and managing blood sugar levels.
Type 2 Diabetes
Often diagnosed in people 45 and older, but in 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 1.5 Million people 18 and older had Types 2 Diabetes.
The pancreas makes insulin, but the cells don't respond correctly to it. This is known as insulin resistance.
Most cases of Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented by eating healthy diet, being active, and doing regular exercise.
Excess weight and obesity are major factors in people developing Type 2 Diabetes.
Develops in pregnant women who don't already have Diabetes.
Diagnosed in 2% - 10% of all pregnancies.
Gestational Diabetes can increase a mother's risk for high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Usually goes away after the baby is born, but in some cases it can develop into Type 2 Diabetes. After the pregnancy return to a healthy weight through diet and exercise.
