If you have been diagnosed with Diabetes, you may be wondering what are your treatment options. There are different approaches to consider.
Doctors offering the traditional/Western approaches to treating people who have Type 2 Diabetes focus on controlling glucose levels in a person's blood. This is done through a combination of diet modification, weight loss, if necessary, exercise, including a target of at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic activity per week, and the prescription of pharmaceutical drugs and/or adding insulin. Patients have to monitor their blood sugar levels on a daily basis.
Eastern or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Treatments
There are Eastern or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Alternative/Holistic Treatments for Diabetes, too. TCM is a holistic approach that includes a combination of acupuncture/moxibustion, Chinese herbal medicine, diet therapy, mind/body exercises (Qi-gong and Tai Chi), and Tui Na (Chinese massage).
Alternative and "natural" treatments can also help control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes or otherwise prevent the condition or its complications. These can include herbs or dietary supplements. Examples include garlic, cinnamon, alpha-lipoic acid, aloe vera, chromium, ginseng, and magnesium. The US FDA does not regulate these herbs and dietary supplements because they are not considered medications.
Additionally, there are some small studies and current research that shows promise in helping reveal neuro-endocrine pathways in the treatment of diabetes through meditation, yoga, and other mind-body therapies. Until more research is completed, these are generally prescribed in conjunction with other proven therapies.
