The flu season is underway and it comes at a high cost - to the health and well-being of each person who gets it and to employers in the communities hardest hit by the illness. Seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and sometimes leads to death. Flu By the Numbers...
The CDC estimates that there have been between 1.7 million and 2.5 million flu cases through November 30, 2019.
Between 800,000 to 1.2 million people have visited medical providers because of flu-like symptoms.
So far, between 16,000 to 29,000 people have been hospitalized in the U.S. because of the flu.
The CDC reports that between 910 to 2,400 recent deaths have been as a result of the flu or may have been a contributing factor. As of December 5, 2019, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human services confirms that five people have died from the flu in our state.
Each year, the flu has a huge impact on employers because their employees miss approximately 17 million workdays, resulting in $7 billion in sick days!
Missing work because of the flu can be devastating to workers because they often lose wages, so they may opt for working through the illness.
