Finding the Right Approach to Health Care is Critical to Achieving and Maintaining Wellness
There are different approaches to health care and as patients it can be confusing as
to what is the right approach for our overall well-being. Three approaches are commonly used in healthcare including: Traditional Primary Care Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Integrative Medicine.
Traditional Primary Care Medicine
This type of medical care involves the first-contact care for people with an undiagnosed symptom, sign, or health concern. Patients go to a primary care physician when they are sick or perhaps once a year for a physical. Primary care physicians provide preventive care, diagnose and manage disease, and coordinate other health services related to a patient's specific medical needs.
Functional Medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Physicians practicing functional medicine evaluate a patient's symptom(s) or differential diagnosis and then look for the cause based on multiple factors including genetics, environment, and lifestyle. The FM physician then prescribes treatment that takes into account all of those factors.
Integrative Medicine is an approach to care that puts the patient at the center and providers address the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health. This type of care is personalized based on an individual's condition, symptoms, needs, and circumstances. Providers use scientific disciplines to heal illness and disease and promote a patient's return to and maintenance of optimum health.
The Wellness Approach
While all three of these approaches have merit, there is a different way - the wellness approach. At BMI Wellness Concepts, Sherri James, MD is on a mission to help people find their way to wellness. This is a different dynamic - one that moves away from the sick model of healthcare. Through preventive and healthy strategies people can achieve wellness. There are eight areas in a person's life that contribute to overall wellness: Physical, Social, Spiritual, Emotional, Environmental. Financial, Intellectual, and Occupational. Maintaining a balance between all of these elements helps a person GET WELL BE WELL STAY WELL.
